Tips For Planning a Successful Vegetable Garden

Growing vegetables is much easier than many other plants. With just a minimum of good planning, proper planting and a little bit of care you'll have a bounty of tasty, natural things to eat.

But before you sow a seed, think.

Climate

Consider your climate first and foremost. Know the conditions necessary for the type of vegetables you plant, so be sure to understand how these plants will be influenced by tropical, temperate, or cold weather. Within these broad categories there are several sub-types. The range of climates in the U.S., for example, runs across a dozen zones. You should not plant tomatoes - a heat-loving vegetable - when you can anticipate a frost after winter's end.

On the other hand, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, onions and more grow well when in cooler climates. They like 50F-68F (10C-20C) weather and will tolerate frost fairly well. Cabbage, carrots, lettuce and others will prefer slightly warmer temperatures, about 60F-75F (15C-25C). Tomatoes, corn, eggplant and potatoes prefer it hot.

Your garden can get too much wind. Providing a wind break might be a good idea. Wind can dry the soil and break tall plants. Cold winds, in particular, tend to stunt plant growth. They remove the heat provided by the sun. A garden lattice or an appropriately designed fence can solve the problem.

Location

Next, consider the total area and location of your planned vegetable garden. A family of four might do well with a 100 square meters, but that's far more than a novice gardener will want to care for at first. Beyond size, think of the specific needs and nature of each plant. Corn grows tall, so it will produce shade. But you don't want that shade to block sun desired by those tomatoes.

When considering the location, think about what you might have to do to protect the vegetable plants from excessive shade and wind. Some places are shaded naturally, and perhaps too much so.

Vegetables like sunlight. At least five hours per day is needed by most. You'll be able to tell they aren't getting enough if your vegetables are far below average size, if the leaves are wimpy looking and by other signs. Plant the taller vegetables, like corn, to the north of the shorter ones. Plants low to the ground, like lettuce, need to be nearer the south edge.

Water

Give your vegetables plenty of water. Unlike herbs and some other plants, vegetables need lots of water to grow. They'll need good drainage in sandy loam in order to avoid root rot. But beyond that, the more water, the better. Watering the base and roots is more important than keeping the leaves wet. A drip system can provide the perfect solution here.

Be prepared to do what the pros do and rotate your crops from year to year. Different plants take different things from the soil in varying quantities. Some of that can be replaced with compost, fertilizer and other soil treatments. But help out by changing your design once in a while.

If you're a do it yourself or or a homeowner who every once in a while, once to tackle a small or large project but doesn't know where to begin, can gather useful information from home building books. I have been using these books for years and may have been worth their weight in gold.

I started my career working for my father and my father worked for his father as a Carpenter. Our job was to frame the house and we built a Lotta homes. I learned how to frame and developed some great carpentry skills from my father and working with other skilled carpenters. Over the years, if you're paying attention, even a monkey can figure out, how to assemble almost anything.

The only problem that I faced, was learning how to build the rest of the home. I would often ask questions to other building trades like plumbers, electricians, roofers and construction superintendents. Some of these people were helpful and others were not. When I was in my early 30s, I purchased my first book on home building. This book lead to other books and soon I found myself with more home building knowledge that my father.

I had about 50 books on home building and soon found myself doing large home remodels, with no formal education. I would attribute almost everything that I learned outside of house framing to books. These books have proven invaluable to me over the years and with a relatively small investment. I couldn't have spent over $200 purchasing these books but have used the knowledge from them to save myself thousands of dollars.

Have you ever thought you could never design anything? There are many people out there who don't think they have a creative bone in their body when they couldn't be more wrong. Challenge this thought by doing your own backyard landscape design.

Of course, as with anything it's helpful to learn the basics first. You have to know which plants can survive in the area where you live and during certain seasons. You also need to browse through different designs that professionals have put together. This can serve as a jumping off point for your own ideas.

After you're done thinking about how the professionals do it you can finally start drafting your own plan. This will include doing a total assessment of the current state of your yard. Just walk around and get an idea of any repairs that need to be made, trees that need to be cut down, and things of that nature. You may want to get a beautiful ground cover, or maybe you prefer vibrantly colored flowers, or easy to maintain shrubs.

Once you have your blueprint ready you can begin to buy all of the items you'll need. Gather up friends and family because the landscaping itself is even harder than the planning! Be prepared to dig in and get your fingernails dirty.

As you go, take note of things that aren't working as you envisioned them. That's OK! Just be flexible. Since you're the designer you can make design changes along the way. As long as you're happy with what you eventually end up with, it doesn't really matter if you don't stick to the original plan 100%.

When you're all finished you can really be proud of all that you have accomplished! It is truly admirable when someone takes action to do something that they have never done before. As you change things out for the seasons or try new things the process will go even better since you are experienced now.

You don't need to buy expensive products to fix your lawn. All you need to fix your lawn is, seed, fertilizer, and compost. To get started we are going to want to rack the affected area with a firm rack, to rough it up. Then with a hoe, cultivator, or a garden fork loosen the soil down a couple of inches to give the grass the chance to germinate and grow long and healthy roots. Following the manufactures instructions place the fertilizer down and work it into the soil with a garden fork or your hands. Make sure that you use gloves when dealing with fertilizer. Once that fertilizer is worked into the soil lightly sprinkle the grass seed over top of the soil. You want to sprinkle the seed like you would salt on some French fries. When buy the seed to use you want to use a type that is a perennial type that is right for your area, not one that is annual and dies after the season. Then once you have the seed is in place cover, the area with compost to aid in the growth of healthy grass. Step on the patch to set the seed. Finally water the seed thoroughly to give the planted seed a great start.

If you think that a pet or animal created the spot with urine, you will want to add lime to the soil to neutralize the acid in the urine. If you are not sure if it was an animal, you can test the soil with a PH tester that you can buy at the store. For grass to grow right it prefers a PH level of 6 - 7.

When dealing with a lot of fixes, you can place the seed fertilizer and the compost into a bucket. Mix the bucket up good to make sure that everything is dispersed evenly. Now you're going to want to roughen up all the areas that need to be fixed. Then place the mixer on to each stop and press it down with your foot. Water the patches daily till the new grass is about two inches high. Then water every other day till the grass is hardy and well rooted.

Raised gardens are small plots formed with soil into raised areas on the ground. Landscaping timbers may be used to frame the bed and can be filled with soil and compost. Raised beds are easy to maintain if they are 3-feet wide or less. This makes weeding and harvesting a cinch and by not walking on the bed, the soil stays soft.

Square-foot gardens are formed by framing and can be filled with soil and compost. Beds can be recycled and replanted once a plant has been harvested. With deeper beds, plants can be grown closer, allowing for a larger variety of plants.

With a little planning, you can create the mood you want in your garden, personalizing it, extending your home to the outdoors.

Traditionally, when I think of porch swings, I think of a wooden bench seat hanging by rope or chain on a covered porch, something traditionally American. But porch swings are not limited anymore to a wooden bench that comfortably seats two adults, but are available in a variety of sizes, styles and materials.

Besides the traditional style of porch swings, there are many people who would like to enjoy sitting on a swing on a lazy summer day sipping lemonade, but do not have anywhere to hang one. But there has long been an answer to this dilemma with covered canopy swings. These are often seen in gardens and on patios. My in-laws have one in their garden where they like to sit together or with grandchildren to watch their waterfall. I am sure that you have seen these before, they are often made of metal with a colorful fabric cushioned cover that can easily be removed and washed. The swing hangs from from a metal frame which has a matching shade cover. So, you kind of get the swing and the covered porch all in one!

I have also seen some really nice wood, free hanging porch swings. Sometimes these are painted, a nice antique white finish gives your garden a quaint victorian feel. This style obviously does not have a shade cover, but they fit great under a large shade tree!

Porch swings can also come in many styles, something to please anybody. The Adirondack style is very popular today, especially known for its comfort. Some other styles I have seen are Savannah and Nautical, as well as Chippendale, French country, fan back, and Nantucket.

When to plant?
As a general rule, spring flowering bulb planting begins in August or September and usually planting is completed by mid December. Later planting is possible but performance could be less than 100%.

How to plant?
Usually bulbs can be planted the equivalent of at least three times the depth of the bulb, but if in doubt check product packaging for details.

Pick healthy bulbs
Be vigilant when selecting bulbs. Avoid any bulbs that appear unhealthy, desiccated or withered looking. Any bulbs displaying rot or mould should be discarded.

How to plant?
For a more natural and visual impact, bulbs are best planted in random groups or clusters under trees or shrubs or in lawn areas. Bulbs are also ideal for planting in planters, containers, window boxes. Each variety has particular planting requirements in terms of recommended planting depth. As a general rule of thumb for the most popular varieties would indicate a planting depth of 150mm. Plant bulbs in clusters but scatter first to achieve a more natural look. Plant bulbs in group which allows the group to develop and spread over time and plant at the rate of approx fifty bulbs for every meter squared.

Preparing the planting hole

Elemental Swimming Pool Landscaping - Carrying Out the Earthworks

This article is the fourth in a series about the elemental landscaping that surrounds and provides the setting for an in-ground swimming pool. The first article identified the factors that affect pool location and size, the second the pool and garden levels and the third article is about the earthworks and how to plan them. This article is about how to carry out the Swimming Pool Earthworks.

The first question that arises is what machinery shall I use and more importantly can I drive the digger myself?

Lets take the machinery issue first. The best machine for most pools will be a 2.7 tonne rubber tracked 360 degree excavator. This will dig most pools up to a 12 x 6 metre size with ease. However if most of the pool arisings need to be moved more than about 10 metres or so it will be better to get some other equipment as well - like a tractor and tipping trailer to load the arisings into for tipping at the right spot.

Backhoe type rubber tired wheeled machines like JCBs, as they are known in Britain, are too big for most gardens and the smaller tracked machines are much safer and do not churn the garden up quite as much. But do not use a machine smaller than 2 tonnes because they are inherently unstable and it is too easy to turn them over.

Should you drive it yourself? My advice is do not even try!

It is quite easy to sit on a digger and shift some dirt. However the whole process becomes quite complex when you know where you want to put the soil but the digger is too small to do it in one operation. It may require perhaps double and even treble handling across areas that also need digging so what is the best way to do it to minimize the time taken? I have dug about 40 pools and I still make the occasional mistake.

I absolutely guarantee that if you have never done this before it will take 3 x times as long just because you dig the pool in the wrong sequence. Your lack of driving skill will just waste even more of the machine time that you are paying for.

Believe me you will be pretty busy if you just watch a skilled operator to make sure that he does not waste any time and that he is doing what you want him to. And if there are any substantial level changes on the site do even think about driving the digger this magnifies the problem by a factor of 4 and is much more dangerous than working on a level site.

You need to take some special precautions if there are a lot of rocks in the subsoil as these will always work their way to the surface and wreck your mower if they are not buried deep enough. So when you have rocks the subsoil needs to be divided into two heaps of large rocks and small rocks plus sub-soil. The large rocks are anything above 150mm in any direction as rocks smaller than this should not wreck the mower. Be warned this will have to be done by hand unless you can hire a rake attachment for your digger!

When they are separated out the rocks need to be buried first so that they are deepest. This will massively increase the time that it will take for them to work their way up to the surface as they always do eventually but if they are deep enough this may take hundreds of years!

How do you do it if the arisings are to be carted off- site?

It is possible to dig the pool and load the arisings straight into a tipper to take it all off site and sometimes this is the only way to do it on a small and restricted site. If the tipping site is a long way away, resulting in a long wait before the tipper returns for the next load, it may also be better to dig and load out especially if double handling to get the material to the load-out stockpile is needed.

But it is often the case that the spoil can only be easily loaded from a specific location simply because the access is restricted or the garden is too soft for a tipper to cross it.

So in most cases, especially if the receiving site is quite close, we find that it is easier and cheaper to dig the pool and stockpile the arisings. Then a tipper lorry is hired for one day and the digger is used continuously just to load out from the stockpile until it has all gone.

To start your yard project there are a couple of thing you will need to think through before you ever pick up a shovel or purchase anything other than a magazine or book to solidify your ideas. Way to many people start a project only to find that they are in way over their heads or that there is not enough time in the day, weeks and months ahead to get the job completed.

I work with a guy that has two newly married sons with brand new older houses. Both boys have grown up watching their old man build, fix and make all kinds of things from a swimming pool to an acre garden and I guess they thought they inherited the fix it gene. My buddy has spent the last 6 months finishing up what the kids started. They had no idea what it would cost or the time it would take and they had the perfect person to ask; their dad.

You may not think you have someone close who can help you but there are plenty of hardware stores that can help you plan and some of them have classes you can take where you can learn some of the techniques and how to do what you want to do. Personally, I use the library and the internet. It is amazing what you can find in these two places.

Now take out a piece of paper and start drawing. Your not making the Mona Lisa so don't worry that it is not to scale, etc.; you can get to that later once you have your plan down. Don't spend too much time on looks but spend a lot of time on wants and staying within your budget.

Changing you yard to something better does not mean you have to tear everything out and bring in everything new, nor does it mean that you have to build that patio, get new furniture and so on and so forth. If you have the budget great, do it. But if you are like most people and need to plan for what you are going to do, go slow. You may be able to buy a couple of major pieces and make that work really well. If you look at a lot of pictures you might just find what you like is very simple and relatively inexpensive.

The next thing is to determine if you can do everything yourself and if so, great. If you cannot then you will either have to get a friend who can help you, learn to do it yourself or hire a professional. I have found that my friends who have the knowledge seem to help me more when I offer to pay them. Of course, if you are on a tight budget, beer and a barbeque will bring many to your door who can help.

The simpler you can keep it the better. This makes things easier as well as more cost and time effective. For example, my son called me from Colorado telling me his mother -in-law wanted him to build her a pergola and asked me if I had any good plans. After asking him the time and money questions, I told him to go online and purchase a pergola kit. The kits these days are awesome. They come predrilled and pre sanded and it does not take a brain surgeon to figure out that it is much less expensive to buy and install one of these as opposed to buying the material and building it from scratch.

So you have to think before you start an outdoor project. Think about the scope of the project, the cost of the project in time and money and think about being able to finish it on time and on budget. Decomposed granite (DG)is a relatively inexpensive, casual paving material which can be used for many different kinds of hardscapes. I say "relatively" inexpensive because there are different applications. As these various installation processes get a bit more involved, the costs increase. However, in its most simple form, it really is one of the less costly paving options.

DG can have a sandy consistency, or the granules can be a bit larger. Its longevity depends on they type of DG used.

There are three types of installations methods.

Loose Decomposed Granite

Loose DG is where the material is used alone. Although it is the least expensive, it is not considered permanent, as it will have to be added to occasionally. This is due to the fact that it can erode and it is not a firm material. Picture a sandy walk which is slightly compacted and that is what loose DG is similar too.

When using this type of application, I would strongly recommend using an edging to hold the DG in place. This can be a steel edging, or something more intricate (and expensive) such as a brick border. The edging, as mentioned, keeps the material in place and from spreading onto adjacent areas, such as lawn.

When using this type of decomposed granite along with steel edging, the cost should be similar to that of concrete.

DG With Stabilizers

In this application, the material is mixed with stabilizers so that a more firm and harder packed substance is created. It will last for about seven to ten years. It is more expensive, but then again, it is important to weigh how important a longer lasting paving material is in the specific area.

DG With Resin

A resin is mixed with the DG. This is the hardest and most firm application. It may or may not have a loose finish on the top layer. There is no problem with erosion and it is the longest lasting of the three types.

DG with stabilizers and with resin can be mixed by your contractor at the project or it can be shipped to the site pre-mixed. The latter is more costly; shipping costs can be quite high.

Check Your Drains For Standing Water

The next time it's raining, grab an umbrella and go for a walk around your property to inspect for current and potential drainage problems.

Start with your gutters and downspouts. Look for overflowing gutters. Sticks, leaves, and other tree debris can quickly fill gutters, causing downspouts to clog and water to overflow into beds. Ice damage can cause gutters to pull away from the house and allow roof water to flow between the fascia trim and the back of the gutters. Check the ends of your downspouts for eroded areas. You may have blocked or collapsed underground drains, which may require clearing or replacement. Or you may need to install or reset splash blocks. Splash blocks on the surface can be unsightly. If underground drain lines are required, I suggest installing PVC drain lines, which are smooth-sided, versus corrugated ADS drains, where possible. I would also include a clean-out connector at the junction of the downspout and drain line to enable inserting a hose or plumber's snake to clean the line periodically.

Inspect the slope of beds adjacent to the house foundation. Are they sloping away from the walls? This is what we refer to as positive drainage. Alvin Sacks, a professional drainage consultant, suggests a slope of at least 4 percent extending out at least 6 feet away from the house. If the beds or lawn slope back to the house, water will collect in these low areas and may seep into foundation walls. Raise low areas with soil and slope them away from the house.

Inspect window wells. Are they set high enough to enable the beds to slope away from the house? Are they filled with debris or are they filled with clean gravel and with several inches of free space beneath windowsills? Over the years, window wells fill up and require cleaning. Low window wells may require replacement or extensions to raise them prior to adding soil to beds to promote positive drainage. It's a good idea to install window well covers to keep water and debris out.

During your inspection, check for low areas in the lawn. Simply adding soil and reseeding or sodding is often the easiest solution. More extensive grading may be required to correct large wet areas. Clay soils will stay wet longer than loam or sandy soils. It is normally acceptable to have standing water remain in your lawn for as long as 24 hours following a rainstorm before considering regrading.

How To Texture A Ceiling

For creating the stipple effect, a "square brush" which contains "flexible rubber prongs" over the surface of the face side of the tool; is used to lightly; "bounce" off, the textured surface. You can also create the same effect, if you roll onto the surface, the texture mix, and keep on rolling over this until a stipple is finally achieved.

The depth on the "finished texture" pattern depends on how thick the consistency of the texture powder is mixed, plus also, how thick you apply the mixed texture material onto the surface to be textured.

To create a final "uniformed" finish, you must make sure that you roll out the applied texture as evenly as possible onto the surface; and keeping it the same depth/level, throughout the whole ceiling.

A lot of new build establishments favour a stipple, broken leather or swirl pattern, usually a stipple pattern can be done quickly, and as texture coating dries out reasonably white doesn't need painting afterwards, thus saving both time and money for the contractor.

In this section I'm going to take a look at the stipple pattern for its uniformed, soft or heavy finish; and the speed at which it can be done.

To achieve1965 this finish, the prepared surface/area to be textured onto has to be as "flat and as level as possible" (Otherwise, any discrepancies and uneven surfaces will show through afterwards).

As this pattern requires the final mixed texture material to resemble a thick emulsion type of paint, I find this one of the messiest patterns to do also.

Mix up a bucket of texture powder, (thick first to get out the lumps).

After letting the thickly mixed texture rest for a few minutes in the bucket, add small amounts of cold water into the texture mix to thin it out.

Then transfer this mixed texture material into the large roller bucket ready for application, and mix once again, using the bumper tool, or drill with the mixing attachment.

When adding cold water to mix down the texture coating to the required consistency, just add a little at a time, as it is not advisable to add powder at this later stage.

The finished product should now resemble thick emulsion paint.

Next step: Decide where to start the pattern onto the ceiling.

I find, when doing a stipple, that the best place to start is furthest away from the room door entrance.

1: Using the large paint roller, attached to the pole/handle, dip the roller head completely into the bucket of mixed texture, to completely cover the roller head. (You can also use a small roller for application if you want.)

2: Lift the roller out and give it a little shake to get rid of the residue, and then sharply offer the loaded roller head to the ceiling surface.

3: Start along the wall edge of the ceiling, (when using the roller, and always extend your straightened arms upwards, and away from you). With a light but firm pressure, pull the roller towards, and above you, to spread the material onto the surface, (rolling on may take a little practise to get right, but this method is used to roll on for any ceiling work.)

4: When you've rolled the texture onto the ceiling, (about 3 foot area coverage) load the roller once again, and roll it onto the ceiling, next to the area that you've just covered.

5: Continue this method until a large area has been coated with the texture mix, probably a third or even half of the ceiling, depending on the size of the area to be covered.

6: When you've completed this; and using the roller again, (but don't load it with texture mix this time), continue to roll out, in the opposite direction of the applied texture, to even out (spread out) the texture coating already applied to the ceiling, otherwise you'll have an uneven finish when you come to stipple it: the thickness of the texture on the ceiling should be about half an inch in depth.

7: The next step is to prime the stipple brush with the mixed texture coating, you can use a large or small stipple brush; but you will get a more uniformed pattern with a large brush, especially if your texturing larger surfaces, making sure a wooden handle is attached to the large stipple brush so that you can reach the ceiling height.

Below is a quick summary:

1: Apply the texture to the surface. Rolling on about a third or even half of the ceiling).

2: Take the roller, (but don't load it with texture mix this time). Roll out onto the ceiling, in the opposite direction of the applied texture to 'even out' the texture already there: otherwise the finished pattern will look uneven.

The next step is to prime the stipple brush.

3: Attach a pole/handle to the stipple brush and hold it so that the soft rubber bristles are pointing upwards.

4: Load the roller head with the texture mix, and gently roll this small amount across the surface of the stipple brush, (the rubber bristles) making sure that you don't squash down or flatten the rubber bristles; once coated with texture we are now ready to stipple the coated area.

5: Stand directly beneath the area to be textured, start along the ceiling/wall edge then lightly bounce the stipple brush onto the ceiling to create the desired effect.

7: Continue stippling and bouncing onto the coated area. (Going to the room door entrance to take a look every now and again, and don't forget, what you can see, so will others-make any adjustments as necessary) continue rolling onto the ceiling, and stippling until complete.

8: Finally, run an inch sized brush around the perimeter of the ceiling to wall line to create a tidy border, and not forgetting the centre rose light also, to tidy up. You can also use a small stipple brush to create this design, but if you're using the large brush, it seems easier to create a more uniformed finish.

The stipple pattern can also be created by just rolling the texture coating onto the surface and then keep rolling the mix out with the roller head until a stipple type pattern is eventually formed.

If you want a heavier stipple effect, mix the thick texture down with cold water as normal but do not add as much water so that you are left with a thicker consistency in the bucket, and then roll this mixture onto the surface, thickly.

A heavy stipple is great for lacing back (flattening slightly) To create an "anaglyptic" looking effect.

New Bark House Stopping Traffic!

When my husband and I bought a vacant lot near Charlotte Street ten months ago, we only considered one material for the exterior as we got ready to build a house there: poplar bark shingles. We were used to seeing 100-year-old chestnut bark houses farther up in the mountains, and wanted that same kind of no-maintenance durability for our new Asheville home.

Apparently not many Asheville residents are used to seeing all-bark houses, though, because the construction site has been stopping traffic since the bark went up in the fall.

Today, chestnut bark is no longer available since a blight wiped out all the trees. However, poplar bark shingles are a worthy substitute, and because I was writing a book about poplar bark shingles, we felt no reservations about that material. My co-author, Chris McCurry, is one of the owners of Highland Craftsmen, the company in Spruce Pine, N.C., that produces the shingles.

Poplar bark is a reclaimed forest material which would otherwise be mulched, burned as industrial fuel, or left to rot on the ground after commercial timber operations. Instead, squared by hand, then kiln-dried and carefully wrapped until installation, the shingles provide a hardy exterior cladding that never needs paint or stain.

Poplar bark shingles are being used not only for homes all over the United States, but also for commercial applications. The shingles range from " to 1 " thick, depending on grade, and come in various lengths and widths. They require careful installation over a plywood substrate and a layer of roofing felt, but once nailed in place according to manufacturer's guidelines they remain flat and stable for decades.

Our lot's small dimensions -- 3,900 square feet, or .09 acre -- dictated a small building footprint, in this case 30' X 32'. That includes a 24' X 24' two-story core of heated space linked by an 8' X 8' bump-out stairwell, with covered porches upstairs and downstairs in the Asheville bungalow style.

Builder Frank Wilson of Candler has overseen construction, with Asheville carpenter David McCaslin hand crafting stairway and porch railings from locust poles. Custom cabinetry by Carl Hankins, owner of Asheville's Kitchen Concepts (cabinet55@charter.net) looks like fine furniture instead of just cupboards.

The downstairs consists of a great room with kitchen and living/dining room, flanked by a guest suite with bathroom; upstairs there's an office and spacious master suite. The house has an energy-saving on-demand water heater and only an under-counter refrigerator, and the covered porches should diminish the need for air-conditioning.

One observer said, "It looks like it rose from the ground." That's exactly the feel that poplar bark shingles give a building. A squirrel took off running up the back of the house once the bark was on.

When it comes to holding back tons of dirt, you basically have two choices. Hire a mason contractor and have a traditional concrete block wall constructed, or you can do it yourself with interlocking (or segmented) retaining wall blocks.

The use of retaining wall blocks as opposed to traditional concrete retaining wall construction is increasing in popularity. You may notice many new commercial construction projects that are using the stacking blocks method of retaining wall construction for many reasons.

Advantages of using retaining blocks

Do it yourself and save money
These blocks create a strong wall that can be considered permanent
Building permits are not required until the wall becomes over 4 feet high - Building codes will vary. Check your local codes.
The wall can be re-configured or removed if needed in the future

Case Study

In my case, the wall I needed is about 75 feet long and from 3 to 4 feet high. The estimate received for the traditional concrete block wall was $6,510FC00. The cost of materials for interlocking blocks was $1,200... a $5,300 savings. Make no mistake about it, this is hard work. The basic steps you take are to dig for your foundation row, stack block, check for proper alignment and level, then backfill and compact. When you find yourself in need of additional living space, consider your basement as the place to grow. You will be surprised at how easy it can be to claim that unused space for a remarkably small investment. Deciding to finish a basement can offer almost unlimited possibilities to meet the needs of a growing family or simply to enhance your lifestyle. You can also finish a basement in stages, as your budget permits additional work.

One of the joys of deciding to finish a basement is the discovery that the most difficult work and the most expensive is probably already done. You already have exterior walls and a floor. You probably also have some windows in place, as well as two points of access to the area: stairs from the first floor of your home and an external access door or window.

First, identify basic needs. Here are some basic initial questions to ask and answer:

1. Do you need to install plumbing?

2. Do you need to install or enhance electrical wiring to various parts of the basement?

3. Do you need to install a separate furnace and air conditioner? Or, can you simply connect new duct work to your existing furnace and air conditioner?

4. Are there supports (posts, etc) that you need to incorporate into your floor plan?

5. Is additional natural lighting needed?

Second, develop a plan for how you will use the space. Identifying the uses you want to make of the space in your basement is the first step in planning your project. Make a list of the rooms or areas you want to create. Some very popular uses of basement space include:

* Select a style and roof line that is consistent with the style of your house

* A home theater

* A home office

* A suite of rooms for in-laws or teens

* A playroom for children

* A den

* A game room

* A wine cellar

* Guest bedrooms

* Storage rooms

* A spa

* An additional bathroom

* A computer or homework room

* A library

* A mud room

* A hobby or craft room

Third, after identifying the rooms or spaces you want to create, plan the location of each room or area within the space. Here are some things to consider in designing your floor plan:

* Since most basements have one to three "sides" that have no windows (because they are essentially underground), plan to place the rooms that do not require windows on that side of the basement. For example, a home theater would be a good choice for a room that will have no windows.

* Try to place bathrooms and/or a kitchenette near or under first floor rooms that already have plumbing. The shorter the distance you must travel with new plumbing, the more money you will save. An ideal spot for a home spa would be in a windowless part of the basement near existing plumbing.

* If your plan includes creating a teen suite or an in-law suite, carefully consider access to the remainder of the space. For example, do not place the bedroom of the suite at the bottom of the stairs from the first floor.

* Plan for access and privacy. For example, if you are finishing your basement in order to create both a playroom for children and an in-law suite for parents, you might want to put them at opposite ends of the basement area.

* Consider the noise from the rooms above. Either locate the rooms that will be used frequently in the basement under quieter rooms upstairs or consider adding sound insulating board on the ceiling in the basement.

The next thing to decide is how many walls you actually want to create. Do you want to create a single large area that has several semi-defined spaces, or do you want to create discrete rooms for each function? You might want some combination of effects, depending on how you will use each space.

Choose the style of decor and the materials you will use to finish your basement. For example, will the walls be drywall or paneling? Will the ceiling be drywall or a drop ceiling? How will you treat the floor? Will you use carpet or tile or hardwood, or some combination for different areas or rooms?

Finally, plan the work itself. Will you do all of the work at once? Or, will you finish part of the basement and delay additional work until a later time? If you plan to delay part of the work, you will want to consider either permanent or temporary closure of the finished area. If your plan is to leave the entire are open, you might need to do all of the walls and ceilings at once, gradually defining areas within the space.

Today, one of the most popular ideas for finished basements is an in-law or teen suite, consisting of a bedroom, a b5B4athroom, and a sitting room. Home theaters are also very popular, with large-screen televisions or projection screens. A small kitchenette for snack preparation can make the home theater perfect. As more people telecommute or start home businesses, a home office can be very practical. Homework rooms are also quite popular today. These are relatively simple to create. All that is needed is computer connections, some bookshelves and a work area large enough to accommodate your childrens needs. A play room or a game room can provide great serenity on the first floor. You can even create your own home spa, complete with whirlpool tub, multi-head massaging shower, steam room, and a tanning bed.

The final question is whether you should do the renovation yourself or hire an expert. This will, of course, depend upon your skill level and the preparation that has already been done in your basement. Many builders today connect at least some electric and plumbing to the basement. Check the laws in your locality to learn what permits are required before you begin the work, and whether your State or locality requires that certain work be performed by licensed professionals. You may find that the best approach is to hire a professional to do the electrical, plumbing, and heat/air conditioning work. There is no reason you cannot hire professionals for the work you are not able to do and keep your project within your budget by doing things like i5B4nstalling drywall, wrapping support posts with decorative columns, painting, wallpapering, etc. Remember, plumbing and electrical work can be dangerous when attempted by people who dont know what they are doing.

Are the lawn, gardens, bushes, and trees well manicured?
Is the yard cluttered?
How does the chimney look?

It is amazing how we can ignore the obvious and not see what others do. One way to avoid this problem is to take pictures of your home from different angles using a digital camera. Then put the pictures on your computer and look at them as a full size picture on your screen – pictures don’t lie, and you will most likely see things that you have never noticed before.

In most cases, you can dramatically increase the selling price of your home with a small investment in material and a large investment in sweat equity.

The Best Time to Inspect Your Home!

Home inspections conducted prior to a home being placed on the market is one of the wisest moves a seller can make. The initial response from sellers when approached with the idea of an inspection done as the home is about to be put up for sale is most always the same - "What?!"

Let's review a few of the most common concerns about Pre-Listing Home Inspections.

1. "The buyer will not accept an inspection done for the seller."

That is correct! The inspection done for the seller is not intended to replace the inspection done for the buyer. The purpose of the pre-listing inspection is to put the seller in control!

Given that no good surprise can come to the seller during the home inspection, regardless of when it is done or whom it is done for, it makes perfect sense to get every strand of information as soon as it can be gotten. Bad news doesn't get better with time.

If there is some b111Cad news, or more correctly, some items that needs attention or might have an impact on the home's value, who better to receive that information than the seller? And when is a better time to receive that information than before the home is placed on the market?

The simple fact is this - a home inspection at the time of listing will put the seller in the best possible position. With the complete and clear view of the home's strengths and weaknesses, the home can be marketed to the best benefit of the seller.

2. "I don't want to pay for the inspection."

This is certainly understandable. The seller generally perceives that the inspection is intended for the buyer, hence, should be a buyer's responsibility. But to have the benefit of the information it must be paid for. Never have we had a complaint from a seller about the value of the inspection! In every case at the conclusion of a pre-listing inspection, the seller felt they had made a good choice in spending the money to get the inspection done.

In most cases, the seller's feel good getting the peace of mind of knowing that no major event or expense will be uncovered by the buyer's inspector. And on the rare occasion when it is discovered by the pre-listing inspector that the roof is completely shot or there is some other big expense or danger, the sellers, while not happy to have the problem, are glad to have discovered it on their own terms. The small expense of the inspection is always less then the cost and aggravation of a hurried hunt to get something repaired or replaced after the home is under contract.

Save the pain, spend the money. Get every home inspected prior to putting it on the market!

3. "The home is selling 'as is'."

This may be the best reason of all to inspect at listing! If the home is being sold "as is", reduce your risk and liability as the seller by getting a pre-listing inspection. In order for the home to sell quickly and at the highest price, disclose every condition of the home. The inspection gives both the buyer and the seller the comfort of knowing that the home "is as it is". With a pre-listing inspection, there is a high likelihood that the home is as represented.

Even in an "as is" contract, the buyer may still have their own inspection performed. If these two inspections are similar in content, it is rare the buyer will walk or counter offer. That, in fact, is the goal of the "as is" sale.

Another concern of sellers is that they will have to repair every item that is discovered to be discrepant on the inspection report. This is simply not true. It would be true that every discrepant item needs to be disclosed, and those disclosures may impact value and hence asking price, but nothing need necessarily be corrected.

Amazing as it may seem, homes inspected prior to going on the market have two very significant attributes:

1. They sell faster than homes not inspected until the buyer has made an offer.

2. They sell closer to the asking price than homes not inspected until the buyer has made an offer.

Why the heck does that happen?

When the buyer makes an offer, there is an assumption made by the buyer, reasonable or not, that there is nothing wrong with the home! If there was something wrong with the home that the seller knew about, but did not disclose, shame on them, it is about to cost them money. Most often, though, the items that come up on the inspection by the buyer were unknown to the seller. Sur-prise, sur-prise, sur-prise! And we've already established that surprise is not good in real estate. So how is it that the inspection for the seller makes the buyer pay more for the home and do it in less time?

Let us create an example of a 20-year-old home that has a fair market value of $100,000, just to make the math easy. That value assumes that nothing is wrong with the home. When the buyer has the home inspected it is with the assumption that anything discovered to be wrong will be corrected by the seller or a price concession will be made.

Now, let's consider that the buyers inspection revealed the need for a new roof, several plumbing leaks, and the need for replacement of three exterior doors. When these discoveries are made by the buyer's inspection, the clock is running and running fast. These items need to be corre5A6cted before the sale can be completed. This time crunch puts the seller at a disadvantage when dealing with the contractors. When time is critical, you have fewer choices and the costs go up. Additionally, the buyer often wants to have input on who does what work.

This situation is always tense and expensive. It can be avoided!

Let us now assume that the inspection result occurs, but it is for the seller as the home goes onto the market. The seller is now in control. Armed with a clear picture of what is wrong, the seller can choose to shop calmly for the best value in repair contractors, offer a credit at closing or adjust the sales price to reflect the diminished value. They can even make the necessary repairs, then increase the price of the home to reflect the increased value!

No matter the choices made, the seller, on the seller's time frame, makes them. This actually makes for a neater, simpler buying decision for the buyer. The buyer knows better what condition the home is in and knows what issues to base the initial offer on. The buyer will still in most cases get the home inspected, but this is a breeze. It is rare that any additional items of significance arise.

The pre-listing inspection puts deal killing at the lowest risk. Most often, it makes for an awesome deal-closing tool!

Hello, my name is John Rocco.I grew up around the window and door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every aspect of residential and commercial glass.Naturally, when it came time to choose a profession, i wound up in the window and door business.I have been in the business for about 27 years, and i have been self employed for 20.

One of the things that separated my company from my competitors was my willingness to show my customers how to replace their windows themselves. Whenever i would encounter a customer with a curiosity or willingness to learn how to install their own windows,i would offer to sell them the labor on one window,using them as my helper.Then,they would install the rest of the windows using the knowledge gained from helping me install one.Most window companies would never do this because there is so much money made on the labor.But i was always so busy,i never felt like it was costing me money.

Eventually, i made an installation video for those homeowners who wanted to do their own windows.While the video is for sale on my website, i decided to take excerpts from the video and write an article once a week covering some part of the window replacement project.This article is going to cover the difference between window frames used in new construction homes, and the window frames that are used to replace existing aluminum or wood windows.

When a new home is being built,the windows are nailed to the wood studs that make up the house frame.In order to accomplish this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud and nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After that,flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks,then the exterior material is applied. That material can be stucco, brick, siding, etc.

Now,imagine 10 or 20 years later when you want to replace those windows. If you were going to install your replacement windows the same way the original windows were installed, you would have to remove the exterior material around each window in order to get to those nails holding the frame in there. You can see how this procedure could cause many problems, not to mention all the labor involved. I have seen homes in california with stucco exteriors where the homeowner had the stucco cut out in order to remove the old windows.The problem was they were unable to match the stucco colors after patching. Its just not a very efficient way to replace windows. So the replacement frame was designed.

In most parts of the country it's simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed. In the west, where stucco is a common home exterior,a retrofit frame was designed. If you're going to be replacing the exterior material on your home, then you might want to consider going with the new construction window since the nailing fins will be exposed anyway. Also, chances are that a contractor will be doing your exterior replacement,and it would be wise to let the contractor install the windows as well.Since my installation videos deal with window replacement only, these articles will focus on replacement frames and retrofit frames. Using these two frame styles,a do it yourselfer can replace their old windows without any damage to existing interior and exterior surfaces. And the job can be done using common tools such as a drill,tape measure, and caulking gun.

Left alone the problem gets worse as the water wears away the valve seat. Then you'll have to either re-grind the valve seat(Do you own a valve seat re-grinder? Who would?) or replace the tap. Tedious in either case. But, it need not happen. Many taps now use ceramic discs.

Method of Operation
Instead of creating a seal by forcing a rubber washer onto the end of the water feed pipe, they use two ceramic discs each with matching slots in them. These are held over the end of the water feed pipe. The lower disc doesn't move while the upper disc is turned over the lower disc by the tap head. Water will only flow when the upper and lower slots match up.

Advantages
There are a number of benefits to this arrangement. The most obvious is that ceramic discs are much harder than rubber and much more resistant to erosion by water seepage. Hence they have a much longer life before needing replacement. Additionally, because the water flows between the two discs, the discs erode not the metal of the valve. Also, because of the way the discs are arranged, the taps go fully on with only one quarter of a turn and tap needs only light pressure to operate. This light action has the advantage that they are easy to operate with the back of the hand if your hands are dirty and for people with restricted movement.

Where they are Used
The ease of operation and the long life mean that most good quality sink mixer taps have been made using ceramic discs for a while, but basin taps with ceramic discs are surprisingly less common. The more use a tap gets, the more attractive the use of ceramic disc technology becomes. This is doubly true in hard water areas, which can be murder on traditional taps.

Disadvantages
Everything has it's downside, and there are cons to ceramic disc taps. They do eventually wear out and are more expensive than old style taps and are not suitable for very low water pressure. Unusually, many of the manufacturers seem to use standard sizes, so getting a replacement is often straightforward. Because taps on basins can be either handed or not not, one can't always be sure which way to turn each tap on, this can be annoying! Lastly, unlike traditional style taps, which take a number of turns to be on full, you may easily turn the water flow on far more than meant. The unexpectedly vigorous water flow and splashing can cause water going everywhere, including over your clothes. Not Good!

Replacing Steel Casement Windows (Part 2)

Last week, I explained how to remove your old steel casement windows as you prepare each opening for the new Vinyl windows. In most of the country, you are limited to a replacement style frame, which is a new construction frame with the nail fin removed. Remember, when you removed the old casement window, you left the perimeter frame in place. So, you have a lip protruding into the opening that is approximately 1/2" wide. You need to order your replacement style frame to fit inside of this old frame. Measure the width from lip to lip and deduct 1/4 to 3/8". Measure the height and deduct 1/4". When you install the new window, rest the new frame on the bottom lip of the old frame. Leave the front of the new frame further outside than the old frame lip. How far out depends on you, and how much inside sill space you want. A quality vinyl replacement window will measure 3 1/4" deep. Drive a screw in the top center to h16BFold it in place. Then, make sure the window is perfectly upright before installing a screw in the bottom center. Now you can secure the rest of the window with screws.

At this point you should have a replacement window that is approximately 5/8" away from the left and right wall, 1/2" from the bottom, and 3/4" from the top. You now need to insulate and trim all four sides. You should get a trim that will adhere to the face of the window frame on the outside, then go over to the wall from which the lip is protruding on all four sides. However, before applying the trim, fill the space with fiberglass insulation. You can get a roll of insulation at the hardware store. You can also get the trim there, but if you choose a wood trim, you will have to paint it. Also, wood is susceptible to weather, so you might be repainting somewhere down the road. I sell a vinyl flat trim in several different widths, that has an adhesive backing to stick to the face of the window. Since it's an exterior grade trim, it will never need maintenance. You do the same procedure when trimming out the inside. Be sure to seal where the trim meets the wall on all four sides inside and out.

If you live in the west, you have a second option. You can get a retrofit frame with a 2" lip on the outside. The purpose of the lip is to stop against the exterior of the house as you insert the window into the opening. If you have a stucco exterior with wood trim around the opening, the retrofit lip will cover the wood and rest on the stucco. However, you have to make sure the new window frame goes further into the room than the lip of the old frame. If the new frame does not go beyond the old frame, you won't be able to trim out the interior to hide the old frame. A quality retrofit window frame measures 3" deep from the back of the retrofit lip. The distance from the stucco surface to the old frame lip must be less than 3", otherwise you have to use the replacement style frame as I described above. If you are able to use the retrofit style frame, you eliminate the step of trimming out the exterior. You still must trim out the interior. Choosing the right Contractor is the most important aspect of any home construction project. You must take your time and do your research to find a good qualified contractor if you want excellent quality at a fair price. When we built our new home we spent many hours finding the best contractors for each aspect of building our new home. We developed a method that served us well and it is as follows:

Determine exactly what you want done and write it down. This may sound a little basic at first blush, but it is so important. Remember what is not well defined is easily manipulated. If it is not in writing, it can be disputed. You do two things when you define your project in detail, and in writing. You find any missing aspects that you may have overlooked and you have good definition and expectations for your contractor.

Get three (3) bids for each trade that you will hire. Never rely on one bid, and always meet the contractor face to face at the site where the work is to be done. If you are uncomfortable with the contractor when they are bidding the job how is it going to be when the two of you have to work out the details of your project. Remember cheaper is not always better!

Ask each contractor for references and make sure they are bonded and insured. Check their references and call the BBB (Better Business Bureau) in your area to see if they have any outstanding complaints.

Make sure they dont sub the work out to a contractor that is not insured or bonded. It is very common for a contract company to sub out work to contractors that are not insured and bonded. Another danger of the contractor subbing work out is if they dont pay their sub, the sub can put a mechanics lien on your house and you will have to pay even if you have already paid the contractor.

Set a definite timeframe for the work to begin and for completion and get it in writing. Nothing is worse than to have a project drag on not knowing when they are going to show up and finish.

Never, ever pay for the entire project in advance. If you do the contractor has no incentive to finish or even start. When you no longer have the money you are no longer in control! It is customary with most contractors that you pay a portion up front. On a large project hold back as much money as you can until the end. The incentive to finish must be motivated by the cash at the end of the project.

Get costings for all the new fixtures you will be adding. Get some quotes for plumbing and any restructuring work. Above all try to stick to this budget as it could impact the completion date if the money dries up. Work out what you can do yourself and what to leave to the professionals. For instance, you could do the initial clearing out. You could strip the wall paper or tiling.

Before finalizing your decision over which professionals you are going to hire make sure you check that they are licensed and insured. Check any references that they give. Be sure to communicate what you require from the professional and ensure that they are clear about this. Keep an eye on their work to be sure it is not deviating from the initial plan. Ensure that the quality is what you expect. You don't have to be on their back every few minutes but asses the work at the end of each day. Never pay more than 10% of their costs up front.

Team Building - From Fun Event to Genuine Team Improvements

What does the phrase "team building" mean to you? Quad-biking? Abseiling? Propping up the bar with your work colleagues? Allow me to disagree.

Let's look at the word "build" and see where that leads us. The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines the word "build" as "Establish, make or accumulate gradually". This definition implies a sense of time passing and growth. This, in turn, implies a modicum of care and attention to maximise the growth - or at the very least monitor the development.

So what kind of process works best to turn a team building session into something that improves team effectiveness back where it matters?

It is not uncommon for trainers and facilitators to like the sound of their own voice. Yet we all know that it is far more powerful if people can learn something for themselves rather than be told it. People turn off very quickly even after a very enjoyable team activity if the next thing they hear is the facilitator telling them his or her view of their performance.

I'll go further - the tried and trusted technique of "What did you do well? What could you have done better?" isn't much better. All too often you can hear people leaving team building sessions saying "every time we do one of these, we fail at the same old things" closely followed by "we'd have been better off talking about the real issues at work". If you are lucky, they might add "I enjoyed it though". So here's the dilemma. If you leave it up to the participants themselves to come up with the improvements, their blinkers stop them from seeing the obvious development opportunities that the activity unveils to those observing. Yet if the observers tell them what they see, the participants don't listen - or worse, become defensive.

I can hear you thinking "but a truly skilled facilitator will lead them to the learning without them realising it". Don't you believe it. Only the most naive of the group will fail to spot a facilitator guiding them somewhere they don't really want to go. And that taints the learning - or at least the chances of it being applied.

So if the participants can't see the learning and won't listen if someone else tells them, is a team building session doomed to mediocrity before it starts? No - there is a third option.

A team building debriefing guide, tailored to the activity and (ideally) to the participant group, is a superb mechanism to guide the learning while not interfering in the process. So what are the key characteristics that such a guide should have? My experience suggests the following seven elements are all key components:

1) It should be tailored to the activity and focus on those aspects that have one or more direct parallels in the group's real working environment.

2) It should provide an opportunity for individuals to reflect before any discussion within the team on the points it makes.

3) It should be constructed such that the input of every member of the team is necessary to complete the process.

4) It should not make value judgements in the way in which it describes particular aspects of the activity that might have gone well or less well for the team. Rather it should provoke discussion and encourage transfer back to the workplace.

5) It should provide places for individuals to capture their own learning and for the team to capture the group learning.

6) It should be useable purely by the participants themselves after brief instruction.

7) It should offer a framework for the team to invite observer input so that any "external" comments are requested by them rather than forced upon them.

Achieve all of these and you will have a superb base to build team improvements upon. And that feels like what the Oxford Concise English Dictionary is getting at.

List Building Essentials - Pt 1

Weve all heard that building an e-mail list is one of the main keys to success on the internet, but just why is it so important and how does the average beginner go about doing it?

Why do I need a list?

When people come to your website, from wherever they have found it, they will make a fairly rapid decision as to whether they want to buy what youre offering or not, right then and there.

Some will of course and thats great but what about all the rest? Did they decide theyre completely not interested and will never, ever buy from you? Maybe.

Or did they not buy today for some other reason. Maybe they said, Ill come back and look at this again, this evening from home, take a closer look and make a decision then.

Maybe they said to themselves, I dont want to buy this now; Ill wait till I get paid. Maybe they said, Id buy this if I knew more about it. Maybe they said, thats interesting but I dont know this guy and it could be rubbish; I know theres a money back guarantee but what if the guys a cheat?. Maybe Ill check out what else is around and come back if I cant find anything.

Youll never know these things because they wont tell you. Whatever the reason, they didnt buy and now theyre about to go. So what can you do to say Whoah there please stick around a little longer?

How can you guarantee that the guy who said hed come back later will remember to do so, or that he will remember but then hell have forgotten the name of your site, or how he got there and even though he wants to he cant come back?

Thats what an opt-in is all about. Its offering up a little hook for your fish to try but its not a painful one, it wont hurt him and he can spit it out anytime its a friendly hook.

You need to grab his e-mail address and keep in touch with him after hes left your site. Heres how you do it.

Opting in

An autoresponder is an automated e-mail service that will send out pre-written e-mails to the people who sign up for it. For example you can create a series of 7 e-mails explaining more about your product or service and when a visitor to your site subscribes they are sent one of these e-mails every day, or every two days or every week or three the first day and two the third and so on. You set the parameters through a very simple interface.

The e-mails should be simple and short just saying things like Thanks for visiting my site, I hope to welcome you back real soon; heres some more info about my product. You give them just a little more in each e-mail. Each one will have a link back to your site so that when the customer is ready he can easily get back there and make the purchase.

In the last e-mail, you might make a final suggestion to buy or make a special discounted offer. If he doesnt buy after that fair enough, say goodbye and end the dialogue. Or maybe not.
